At a very basic level, the answer is that the crocodile is only doing its 'dharma'; i.e. what the creator has ordained it to do. The word 'dharma' comes from the root word which means to 'uphold', and if the crocodile did not uphold its dharma then the 'ritu', (from which comes our English word 'ritual' and meaning something fairly similar) would not proceed in the ordered form, something that the creator would not have wished.
