How to keep birds from eating up all the cat food I put out?

I'm a sucker for animals. I feed some outside kitties and the birds are smart and figured me out. The cat food gets devoured in a short time and I don't know what to do. How can I outsmart the birds? I am going through ALOT of cat food here. Help.
