What is it called when the large intestine takes over the small intestine?

I hear it's usually common in the newly born and elderly. The large intestine takes over - or devours - the small intestine, and there's a lot of vomiting and a lack of eating involved. The patient's skin may pale as well as their eyes. What is this called?
