Why does my blackberry curve connection differ from time to time?

Sometimes it will say GPRS in capital letters, and sometimes 3G, and sometimes gprs in lower case, and now uma in lowercase and also sometimes capitals, how come it keeps changing, like when I am at school in the playground, sometimes it will go to gprs why does it do this and not stay on 3G, what's happening?
